Especially when dismantling contaminated facilities, it is important that the work can be carried out from a safe distance, as the protection of the operating personnel must be paramount. The Braun drilling system is designed to make such drilling work possible. 

Dismantling nuclear facilities

For a dismantling project in Canada at a nuclear facility, completely sealed rooms that were highly contaminated on the inside had to be made accessible. The decision was made to gain access by means of stitch drilling, with the wall thickness being 1m. The client was already familiar with Braun’s wall shaving system, as it was used for decontamination work from a safe distance. Consequently, the basis of the system was retained for the new project, with the wall shaver further developed into a drilling system. The client now has one system for two applications with remote milling and drilling work significantly improving the situation on the construction site for the operating personnel, as work can be carried out much more quickly and safely. The milling and drilling work is carried out with the same control system. 

Modular system

Thanks to the modular system on which the Braun product range is based, it was possible to convert from the patented ‘Braun Wall Shaver’ to the remote controlled drilling system by using almost entirely existing product components. Braun’s universal control system can also be used for many other applications. 

From father to son for seven generations

The foundation of the Braun company dates back to 1848, the year of revolutions. The original product was the file, manufactured in a forge. Later, the company also produced, for example, armour, springs and axles for railroad carriages. The company entered the machine building sector in the mid-1960s. Concrete cutting and drilling machines have been produced since the early 1980s. Special machines for the dismantling of nuclear power plants have been manufactured for around 15years now. Braun’s remote controlled drilling system was submitted for the Diamond Award 2025.
