For the refurbishment of Hamburg Airport’s taxiway D1 in a short timescale, company Kemna Bau Andreae GmbH & Co KG opted to use six Liebherr excavators with attachments to suit.

Things had to move quickly on Hamburg Airport’s taxiway D1 as interruption to flight operations on the affected taxiway had to be short lived, with the renovation work carried out as quickly as possible. Kemna Bau Andreae GmbH & Co KG hired six Liebherr machines for the work from Liebherr-Mietpartner GmbH. These comprised of four wheeled excavators and two R 920 compact crawler excavators, with the projected being completed ahead schedule.

Liebherr-Mietpartner GmbH proved to be a reliable partner for the contractor on the at Hamburg Airport. With the rental of six machines, the work on the taxiway was completed to a high standard. Once the old concrete surface of the taxiway had been milled away, the excavators came into play. They used an assortment of attachments, including hydraulic hammers which were used to break out damaged concrete patches before the taxiway was excavated and an asphalt base layer was applied as part of the extensive renovation work. This created the basis for the SAMI layer (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer) - a type of stress relieving intermediate layer - before the asphalt surface course was finally installed.

Wheeled excavators from Liebherr can be used for a wide range of applications. In addition to the classic wheeled excavators, Liebherr offers a wide variety of models including a compact variant which is said to possess a powerful engine capable of dealing with high loads and for demanding work cycles. Designed to deliver excellent mobility, Liebherr believes its wheeled excavators are genuine all-rounders. The company further believes that thanks to innovative technologies, such as intelligent assistance systems, they enable more efficient and safer work processes and have a high level of economy and low fuel consumption, which reduces operating costs.

The Liebherr R 920 compact crawler excavator combines the characteristics of a standard crawler excavator - such as high performance and versatility -  with the advantage of a compact wheeled excavator. The diesel engine has a performance of 110kW and meets the requirements of exhaust emission stage V. With a low tail swing radius of 1,850mm, it can be used flexibly on inner city construction sites, whilst its compact dimensions and its low operating mass of just 19t are designed to deliver high mobility and simple, fast transport between different operating locations.

In addition to the powerful mobile and crawler excavators, Liebherr also offers an extensive portfolio of suitable attachments. For example, the TR25 tiltrotator was used during the renovation of the taxiway at Hamburg Airport. This has a swing angle of 2 x 50° and can endlessly rotate through 360°. Various backhoe and ditch cleaning buckets were also used to carry out the renovation work. Thanks to the fully automatic ‘Likufix’ quick coupling systems, safe and quick attachments changes were made directly from the operator cab.

Kemna Bau Andreae GmbH & Co KG hired the Liebherr Excavators used to renovate the D1 taxiway at Hamburg Airport from Liebherr-Mietpartner GmbH. The company, which was founded in 1997, specialises in the rental of earthmoving and handling machines and offers customers over 3,000 high quality machines of all sizes from 70 locations. This means that customers can access Liebherr machines at short notice.
