Hilti advises on how to care for lithium ion batteries in cold weather

Published 26/2 at 16:07

Keeping tools in good condition is key to maintaining productivity on the jobsite. With the new generation of high performance cordless tools, it’s more important than ever to care properly for the lithium ion batteries, especially during the winter, when the cold can affect both performance and lifespan. Taking good care will help with longer runtimes and better performance. However, improper handling can lead to reduced efficiency and, in the worst case, safety risks if the batteries unexpectedly stop working.

The effect of temperature

The performance and lifespan of batteries are greatly affected by temperature. Both extreme heat and cold can reduce battery capacity and accelerate aging. Lithium ion batteries work optimally at room temperature (around 20°). At temperatures above 60°, chemical degradation processes can start, permanently reducing battery lifespan. To maximise battery performance and durability Hilti advises to store in a cool place and protect from direct sunlight. Replace batteries that have been exposed to high temperatures, even if they still have a charge, and allow hot batteries to cool before charging or use an active cooling system. The Hilti C 6-22 and C 8-22 chargers are equipped with active cooling systems that cool the battery through ventilation openings before charging begins. This contributes to a longer service life and safer use.

Practical tips

Batteries should be kept partially charged in cold weather. The battery charge should be only taken down to 80% before the temperature drops and then should be disconnected. The batteries should be stored and charged indoors and not left outside overnight. Hilti further advises using original batteries from the tool manufacturer. For best performance, Hilti advises to use batteries from the same manufacturer as the tools as they are designed to work optimally together and often withstand colder temperatures better.

Hilti ‘Nuron’ batteries optimised for all temperatures

Hilti’s lithium ion batteries in its 12V, 22V and 36V ranges are said by the company to provide longer runtime and greater compatibility, regardless of temperature and working conditions. In addition to performing at their best even in the cold, Nuron technology offers several other benefits including providing the same power as a corded or gas powered tool but with the weight and ergonomics of a 22V battery. Additionally, it has one platform for its all tools enabling the swapping of batteries between different machines which maximises productivity without the need for multiple battery systems. The Nuron technology also has built in diagnostics, with the battery warning well in advance before it runs out of charge. This is accompanied by a durable design that has sealed electronics to protect the batteries from cold, water, dust and dirt.

Additional support for battery management

Hilti fleet management customers are offered additional tools to manage lithium ion batteries in cold weather conditions. This includes data driven services to help ensure batteries are charged correctly and replaced on time. Also available are fast, free repairs for batteries with degraded performance.
