A paradigm shift towards electrification for Dynaset
Published 27/2 at 13:53Dynaset from Ylöjärvi, Finland, is one of a number of genuine Nordic manufacturers of advanced equipment for construction and civil engineering machinery that have achieved great success worldwide. Its hard to name a global construction and civil engineering trade fair that Dynaset is not represented at, as the company can be seen everywhere. Now, the company has announced that it is fully entering the world of electrification and launching four new product series.
Dynaset was founded in 1986 by Reijo Karppinen in a garage in Ylöjärvi, just outside Tampere in Finland. Since the beginning, Dynaset has been a pioneer in hydraulically powered machinery and equipment. Reijo Karppinen is still very active in the company but has handed over the CEO role to his daughter, Anni Karppinen. Next year the company will celebrate 40years in business. Over the years it has been operating it has constantly striven to increase the productivity, efficiency and versatility of new machines and equipment that use hydraulic power to create electricity, high pressure water, compressed air, magnet power, vibration, power boosting and vacuum. For Dynaset, there are no limits to what can be created with hydraulic power.
Dynaset in a paradigm shift
When Dynaset gathered the Nordic press on 29 January at its facility in Ylöjärvi, it was because the company was facing a paradigm shift. Dynaset’s motto has always been ‘Powered by Hydraulics’. But now it is broadening its approach and changing its slogan to ‘Partner of Your Machine’. The reason is that Dynaset is now taking a completely new step into the electrified world. This is not because this is new to the company, or an area Dynaset has not previously mastered, but with the markets increased focus on electric operation, this is a completely natural step for Dynaset. “This does not mean that Dynaset is in any way abandoning its focus on hydraulics,” stated Anni Karppinen when she opened the press conference.
After solid and thorough development work that has taken several years, the company is now ready to launch its powerful focus on electrically powered machines and equipment within the same product areas where it has already fully developed hydraulically powered machines. “However, I would like to emphasise again that this genuine focus on electrification does not mean that we are abandoning hydraulics in any way. We remain a leader in hydraulically powered machines and equipment and will continue to be, which is our ambition to continue developing our hydraulic technology,” says Anni Karppinen.
New ‘EPW DC’ series
In connection with Dynaset’s transition or rather broadening of its product range to now also include machines and equipment that are powered by the batteries on the carrier machines, or connected to the electricity grid, the company has changed it company slogan to ‘Partner of Your Machine’. It has also launched four completely new electrically powered products. Pasi Yli-Kätkä, R&D Director, and Camilla Mäkinen, marketing specialist at Dynaset, stated that the first new product is the electric high pressure water pump series, EPW DC. The EPW DC is intended for mobile applications and converts DC (direct current) power from the base machine’s battery to the high pressure water. The pump operates within the power range of 400-700VDC. The pump series is IP65 protected, which guarantees that it is both dust and completely waterproof as well as very compact, impact resistant and easy to install. The series includes three pump sizes: EPW200/30 DC, EPW200/50 DC and EPW450/20 DC. The EPW200/30 DC has a flow of 30l/min and maintains a pressure of 200bar. It is equipped with automatic start and stop. The EPW200/50 DC has a flow of 50l/min and maintains a pressure of 200bar. EPW450/20 DC has a flow of 20l/min and maintains a pressure of 450bar.
New ‘EPW AC’ series
The second new product launched is the EPW150 AC, which is the first model in the EPW AC series intended for stationary applications. The EPW AC series delivers high pressure water for stationary applications where power is available. It operates directly from a 400VAC mains, enabling easy and seamless integration into stationary work environments. The EPW150 AC has a flow rate of 15l/min and a maximum pressure of 150bar. The pump is IP55 protected and is equipped with an automatic start and stop mechanism. All EPW models are suitable for high pressure washing, dust management, pipe cleaning, street cleaning, hydro scaling and fire protection.
New ‘EPW-DUST’
The next new product presented was the EPW-DUST high pressure system. By using the electric high pressure water pump ‘EPW’, the EPW-DUST converts the base machine’s electric power into high pressure water mist. The dust cover is available in both DC and AC versions to suit different applications. The DC version is ideal for mobile work machines, such as battery powered excavators. The AC version is designed for stationary applications, such as dust protection in crushers etc.
‘EKR’ series electric screw compressors
The next new development presented was the new EKR series of electric screw compressors. The EKR converts direct current from the base machine’s battery into compressed air. It operates within a power range of 400-700VDC and is designed for durable, reliable operation around the clock. The compressors are compact, durable and easy to install. The series is currently available in two models, EKR2500 and EKR4000. The EKR2500 can deliver compressed air up to 2,500l/min. The pressure is maximum 10bar and the compressor is IP65 protected. The EKR4000 can deliver compressed air up to 4,000l/min. The pressure is maximum 10bar and the compressor is IP65 protected. Suitable areas of use include air powered tools, blasting, repair and maintenance work, air blowing and cleaning. It is suitable for various industries, including construction, mining, infrastructure projects, agriculture and service. The electric screw compressor can also be easily connected to a battery powered carrier.
Battery operation on various types of machines is developing rapidly, with the technology becoming increasingly standardised. An example of this is that the different voltage classes are being standardised. Actuators under 15kW power can have lower nominal voltages, e.g. 48, 60, 96 and 120VDC. Dynaset currently offers a voltage range of 400-700VDC in its products. The principle of Dynaset’s electric powered products is to simply connect to the working machine’s DC power line without an inverter. Inverters cause additional costs and result in power losses and consume battery capacity quickly. Dynaset’s new electric products have their own electric motor control units, which provides increased safety. The electric motors have been made very compact, have an S1 duty cycle and are all IP65 rated to withstand continuous operation.
“Dynaset’s development work is guided by the ongoing trends in technology with the electrification of machines and equipment in the sectors that the company works with. With a high awareness of constant changes, we as manufacturers are very adaptable and often try to stay one step ahead and create our own trends with the aim of making things easier for our end customers,” concludes Anni Karppinen.
The group of around fifteen industry journalists received an interesting and rewarding overview of Dynaset’s major investment in electrification. They were also given a tour of Dynaset’s production facilities, which was given by Tero Ylä-Soininmäki, production manager at Dynaset. The new products and Dynaset’s investment will of course be shown at the bauma trade fair in April and all other trade fairs that Dynaset participates in during 2025. PDi Magazine’s representative Jan Hermansson greatly appreciated being invited to the interesting press conference.
