20 years of Erkat, three years owned by Epiroc, a success storyPublished 27/12, 2019 at 17:09
Founded as a 2 man operation, the highly respected Erkat brand is marking its 20th anniversary. Since January 2017, Erkat has been part of Epiroc, and under the Epiroc umbrella, the Erkat drum cutter units have continued to have a bright future, with constant innovations being developed for even harder tasks and more specialist applications.
A win-win situation
Epiroc was able to expand its Construction Tools Division in January 2017 with the incorporation of Erkat. A successful brand in itself, it is still based at the Hämbach site with a product range that includes high quality transverse and longitudinal drum cutters for demolition, trenching, tunnelling and rock excavation, that make the perfect addition to the Epiroc product ranges. Coming under the Epiroc umbrella has had other positive impacts for Erkat; there is now increased awareness for its innovative products and new customer groups have been added. There are operational synergies such as carrying out main material removal with an Epiroc breaker, followed by polishing with the Erkat cutter unit during tunnelling work.
The ER cutter unit series is highly versatile, meaning that for excavator classes from 0.6t to 125t, Erkat offers a wide selection of different cutter unit sizes (ER 40X to ER 5500). Different cutting heads are also available for the relevant base unit depending on the usage area (rock milling head, profiling head, cutting wheel, mixing head, wood milling head, brush head). Robust design, high resilience, low maintenance and easy handling (with the ‘QuickSnap’ lock for example) offer impressive efficiency as a matter of course.
The ER series is equally suited for trenching and tunnelling work, special civil engineering, demolition work, milling ditches and for mixing soil formations. They can also be used in particularly sensitive areas, as extremely low vibration and low noise work is possible, whilst the cutter units can even be used in water depths of up to 30m with no modifications. This means that Erkat products are ideal for working in even the most difficult conditions.
The advantages of the products were readily apparent during building work at Berlin’s central station, where the cutter units ER 1500 L and ER 2000 X are currently demonstrating their flexibility. Here they are creating space for a hydraulic Epiroc breaker to find the right point for breaking the concrete ground – an ideal division of work. The transverse drum cutters are also delivering impressive performance working high up on the bunker ceiling during the selective reverse construction of a high rise bunker in Hamburg Eimsbüttel. The focus here is on low vibration work, efficient demolition performance and quick tool replacement.
Quality and innovation for the future
In future, the focus will be on constant further development to reflect market requirements. Epiroc aims to expand the position of Erkat products even further, minimising fine dust pollution at construction sites with more efficient water spraying and to significantly increase the product range. Reinforced cutter units for demolition and tunnel construction, specially developed rotator systems, cutting wheels for mounting on existing transverse drum cutters, brush heads with and without dry aspiration and much more are already available. A focus will be placed mainly on sustainable work areas such as renovations, explosive free reverse construction in inner city areas or the removal of contaminated surfaces, with all solutions being developed at the Erkat Hämbach site.
