Grinder for tough conditions
Just a few hundred metres from the PDi Magazine Editorial office north of Stockholm the Swedish supermarket chain ICA is building a new mega store called ICA Maxi. This construction project carried out by very few contractors is a perfect example of how different demolition methods interact with each other.
The Swedish demolition and concrete sawing & drilling contractor Avancerad Borrteknik was hired together with the concrete cutting firm Betongborrarna to carry out an interior demolition of a 12,000 m2 large industrial building in the Stockholm suburb Häggvik. Several inner walls and concrete structures were taken down and the amount of concrete waste was estimated to be about 1,000 t and another 300 t of light materials, like inner walls, inner ceilings, and gypsum.
8,000 m2 of concrete floor grinding As the supermarket ICA Maxi will move in later this year the old concrete floor in the shopping hall needed grinding. Some 8,000 m2 has been ground with floor grinding machinery and grinding tools from the Swedish manufacturer Scanmaskin AB. The company offers a wide range of floor grinders for professional use. These include two smaller machines ScanCombiflex 45 and ScanCombiflex 500 and the three larger ScanCombiflex 535, ScanCombiflex 650 SI and ScanCombiflex 780 SI. At the ICA Maxi project mainly the ScanCombiflex 780 SI and the ScanCombiflex 500 have been used.
The new Combiflex 500 ScanCombiflex 500 is a completely new machine from Scanmaskin developed for tough treatment and difficult coatings on concrete floors, but also for grinding stone and weighs 120 kg. According to Scanmaskin AB founder and owner Claes-Göran Bergstrand, Combiflex combines the power in the unique grinding method with the rotating diamond discs. “This is a planetary grinder, which means that the three small diamond discs rotate in one direction while the disc they are attached to spins in the opposite direction,” says Claes-Göran Bergstrand. “ScanCombiflex allows grinding on the highest speed with a heavier weight than average on the diamond discs. The high removal capacity this machine offers makes it very efficient while removing paint, glue, epoxy and contaminations from coatings.” ScanCombiflex 500 is made from steel without any plastic components. The robust vulcanised disc holders are able to lower vibration and make the machine smooth to work with even if the floor surface is bumpy. A wide assortment of grinding and milling discs is also available.
Few production stops “We are very satisfied with the equipment from Scanmaskin and the company offer a very good service,” says Avancerad Borrteknik owner and managing director Jonas Bengtsson. “We seldom have any problems with equipment from Scanmaskin. The machines are simple to work with and they can take the tough treatment that is common on a demolition site like the ICA Maxi project in Häggvik.” Avancerad Borrteknik provides all the relevant demolition and concrete sawing and drilling and grinding services required for this type of work. “We are much more competitive offering a total solution and that is also what the clients are asking for these days,” adds Jonas Bengtsson. Scanmaskin has also recently released a new grinding tool system called “Snap On”, which simplifies the change of diamond segments. www.scanmaskin.se
